Written by: Susan Shilliday and William D. Wittliff (screenplay), Jim Harrison (novella) / Directed by: Edward Zwick / Starring: Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Aidan Quinn / Rated: R
Plot:
The sprawling tale of three brothers raised by their father in the mid-west. When the youngest brother brings his fiance home, the bonds of brother are strained.
Review:
It's a manipulative movie that uses tragedy among the three brothers to its advantage. Brad Pitt is the cool brother. He's free spirited and crazy. It drives the girls wild.
We're supposed to side with him because for some reason he feels guilty over his brother's death which he had nothing to do with. He has no remorse that his brother's girlfriend likes him and he even encourages it.
The winding little story tries to make us feel bad for Tristan. While he looks like Brad Pitt, his life is so tragic. Oh how sad.
Tristan enters a life of crime, forming a rift with two brother criminals. Violence strikes, who'd have thought there was downside to alcohol smuggling during the prohibition?
There's a weepy voice over narration to end it. Tristan remains so cool even towards the end. The movie creates this interesting character and then undercuts him.
This movie sucks!
